What beginners can expect from a first session at Genesis Hybrid — from warm-up and technique to scalable training.

Coach guiding a member through a first gym session

Walking into a new training environment for the first time can feel intimidating.

You may wonder whether everyone else is stronger, fitter or more experienced.

The reality is that everybody started somewhere.

Your first session should be about learning — not proving yourself.

Before Your Session

Confirm:

  • Session time.
  • Programme.
  • Location.
  • Any programme-specific requirements.
  • Recommended clothing.
  • Whether booking is required.

Arriving slightly early can give you time to familiarise yourself with the environment. Check the timetable and, if needed, contact the team beforehand.

What Should You Wear?

For general training, comfortable exercise clothing and suitable footwear are usually appropriate.

Requirements can vary for specialised sessions.

For example, Aerial, Reformer and Weightlifting may have programme-specific recommendations, so check before attending.

Bring water and anything specifically requested by your coach.

Your Introduction

A good first session should give you an understanding of:

  • The training area.
  • Session structure.
  • Equipment.
  • Important safety procedures.
  • Your coach's instructions.
  • How exercises can be modified.

Ask questions whenever something is unclear. Our beginner's guide covers how to choose a starting programme before you arrive.

The Warm-Up

Training commonly begins with preparation for the movements that follow.

This may involve:

  • General movement.
  • Mobility.
  • Technique drills.
  • Light resistance.
  • Gradually increasing intensity.

The purpose is preparation rather than exhaustion.

Learning Technique

If you are new to resistance or functional training, your coach may spend time teaching foundational movements.

Technique matters because it helps you perform exercises more efficiently and gives the coach a basis for future progression.

Do not compare your weights, repetitions or pace with experienced members.

Your First Session Should Be Scalable

Most exercises can be adjusted through:

  • Resistance.
  • Range of motion.
  • Repetitions.
  • Speed.
  • Duration.
  • Movement variation.

A beginner and an experienced member can therefore train toward similar objectives at different levels of difficulty — whether in Strength Training, Hybrid Strength & Conditioning or another programme.

What Happens Afterward?

Your coach may suggest:

  • Appropriate future sessions.
  • Training frequency.
  • A suitable programme.
  • Areas to practise.
  • Recovery recommendations.
  • Membership options.

You may experience normal muscle soreness after unfamiliar exercise, but training should not require you to prove how much discomfort you can tolerate. Compare memberships once you know which direction feels right.

Your First Session Is Only the Beginning

Do not judge your potential based on one workout.

The first session provides a baseline.

Progress develops as movement becomes more familiar, fitness improves and training becomes part of your normal week. Guidance on how often beginners should train can help you plan the weeks that follow.
